Making tax digital

What is it and what is all the fuss about?

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is a new UK system that means you’ll need to keep your business records online and send updates to HMRC using approved software.

From April 2026, if you’re self-employed or a landlord and your turnover is £50,000 or more, you’ll need to send your income and expenses to HMRC every three months.

This rule will also apply to those earning £30,000 or more from April 2027, and £20,000 or more from April 2028.

What does this mean for me?

HMRC require 5 submissions each year from the self employed

Quarter ending 5th July (due 7th August)
Quarter ending 5th Oct (due 7th Nov)
Quarter ending 5th Jan (due 7th Feb)
Quarter ending 5th Apr (due 7th May)
31st January End of Year update (like existing tax return)
